Seasonal Parks Maintenance Operator

Haines Junction lies on the edge the vast and spectacular wilderness of Kluane National Park including the largest internationally protected area on earth and the planet’s largest non-polar ice fields. Located in the southwestern corner of the Yukon Territory, approximately 160 kilometers from Yukon’s capital city Whitehorse, Haines Junction and the surrounding area is home to roughly 900 residents, and we are looking for one more.

The Village of Haines Junction invites applications for the seasonal full-time position of Parks Maintenance Operator. We offer a competitive benefits package and a positive and highly diverse working environment. This is a bargaining unit position within the local of Y042 (Yukon Employees union)

General Summary

Reporting directly to the Public Works Manager, with general direction from the lead hand assigned, this position performs a variety of tasks related to the day maintenance of all parks, pathways, cemetery, drainage ditches, playgrounds, and greenspaces and performs other related duties.

Duties and Responsibilities - include but are not limited to the following:

  • Operation of various large mowing equipment.
  • Operation / maintenance of gas powered trimmers, mowers, chainsaws, and hand tools
  • Assist the Seasonal Gardener with earthworks and landscaping
  • Complete roadway maintenance including street patching, gravel resurfacing, site / grounds vegetation control maintenance as required.
  • Provide labour for the construction, maintenance and repairs of roads, streets, alleys, rights of way, and trails
  • Performs general infrastructure and building maintenance,
  • Perform maintenance and routine repairs of roads and streets, parks, playgrounds and buildings.
  • Perform work in accordance with Occupational Health & Safety regulations and procedures.
  • Complete job-related training as required.


POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

Grade 12. Experience performing labourer tasks and repair and maintenance of various tools and machinery, preferably in a municipal environment. Experience providing customer service would be desirable. Skilled trades experience and proven ability to troubleshoot considered a strong asset. Experience operating heavy equipment would be an asset. An equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered.

Knowledge, Skills, Ability:

  • Some knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and equipment
  • Ability to perform basic carpentry and welding tasks
  • Ability to use and care for equipment and tools
  • Ability to effectively use or learn to use computer applications
  • Ability to operate equipment such as lawn mowers
  • Ability to handle tools such as rakes, shovels, hoes
  • Ability to use a cellphone for team communication
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to perform manual/physical labour and to work in all weather conditions
  • Ability to take direction
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills and customer service


Additional Information

Job Requirements:

  • Ability to maintain a strong physical pace for 8-hour days
  • Physically fit with the ability/capabilities of lifting up to 50 lbs
  • Must wear personal protective equipment, including steel-toe boots and rain gear
  • Willing and able to work independently in varying weather conditions


Conditions of Employment:

  • Valid Yukon Class 5 driver’s license
  • WHMIS training
  • Standard First Aid/CPR
  • Chainsaw Certificate would be desirable
  • Willing to take further training as required
  • Willing to work evenings, weekends and/or holidays as required
  • Willing to travel to Whitehorse as required
