Located in the southwestern corner of the Yukon Territory, approximately 160 kilometers from Yukon’s capital city Whitehorse, Haines Junction and the surrounding area is home to roughly 900 residents, and we are looking for one more. 

The Village of Haines Junction invites applications for the permanent full-time position of Public Works Utility Maintenance Operator 2. General Summary

Reporting to the Public Works Manager, this position operates and adjusts treatment processes, conducts sampling and testing of water and wastewater quality, troubleshoots equipment and performs preventative and emergency maintenance to ensure quality, public health and safety of water and wastewater facilities, and performs other related duties.

 

Duties and Responsibilities - include but are not limited to the following:

  • Operate, monitor, inspect and maintain all water and sewage treatment, collection, and distribution systems and facilities.
  • Manage operational and control methodology to ensure system-wide integrity. Assist with the programming, testing, and maintaining alarm and monitoring systems, including SCADA system controls and related alarm systems.
  • Identify and take corrective actions for moderate to advanced treatment plant operations to ensure compliance with all statutory, regulatory, and internal procedures and processes.
  • Operate, calibrate, maintain, and repair all water and sewage systems, including pumping, circulation and pressure regulating stations, groundwater wells, water reservoirs, sewage treatment facilities, and sanitary and storm sewer lift stations.
  • Conduct chemical, physical, and bacteriological sampling of potable water, record results and implement adjustments as required. Operate, test, and calibrate analyzers and chemical dosage control and measuring equipment.
  • Operate maintenance tools and heavy equipment including backhoe, excavator, wheel loader, dump truck, sewer flusher and snow removal equipment.   
  • Take daily readings, log irregularities, compile statistics and prepare and maintain accurate records.
  • Assist in developing and maintaining standard operating procedures, maintenance, and asset management systems.
  • Maintain a tidy, sanitary appearance of the water and wastewater treatment plants.
  • Assist in maintaining an inventory of supplies, ordering, and purchasing replacements in a timely fashion, in accordance with procurement processes.
  • Assist in routine and emergency repairs to water and wastewater distribution systems. 
  • Follow established safety procedures and standards so far as is reasonably practicable.
  • Act as Direct Responsible Charge for Water and Sewer system as required.

 

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

Grade 12.  Certification in Water Treatment from EOCP or equivalent.  Certification Level two or higher qualification in water distribution, wastewater collection and wastewater treatment considered an asset.   Completion of recognized water and wastewater program is considered an asset.  Three (3) years’ operating experience at a Class 1 or higher facility: Water Treatment and Water Distribution.  Experience in operating SCADA systems and in municipal water utility is required.   Experience operating heavy equipment is required.  Supervisory experience would be an asset.  Skilled trades experience would be an asset.  Lab experience with chemicals and sampling, testing and interpretation is preferred. An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.   

Knowledge, Skills, Ability

  • Thorough knowledge of the operation, maintenance, and construction of water distribution systems. 
  • Thorough knowledge of the operation, maintenance, and construction of sewage collection systems. 
  • Intermediate knowledge of water and wastewater systems. 
  • Knowledge of SCADA systems and process controls, operating and repairing systems including valves, pumps and systems are considered is an asset. 
  • Sound knowledge and the ability to follow health and safety rules and regulations.
  • Trades skills such as carpentry and welding and Good mechanical skills would be an asset. 
  • Ability to operate heavy equipment such as loaders, backhoes, excavators, tractors, mowers, sanding trucks etc.
  • Proven ability to troubleshoot. 
  • Ability to effectively use computer applications.
  • Ability to work alone under minimal supervision.
  • Ability to respond to concerns in a timely, solutions-focused manner.
  • Ability to set priorities and ability to manage multiple tasks.
  • Ability to work outside in various weather conditions.
  • Ability to perform basic math calculations.
  • Proven ability to concentrate, pay attention to detail, organize, priority set and be a team player.
  • Ability to work with little supervision and function in a multi-discipline environment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively using courtesy, positivity, tact, and discretion in dealing with requests, complaints, or concerns.
  • Good public relations skills with the ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. 
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with a desire to work in a team environment.
  • Excellent organizational skills and good problem-solving skills
  • Ability to represent Municipal Public Works in a professional and competent manner.

Additional Information:

Job Requirements:

  • Willing to work evenings, weekends and/or holidays.  
  • Willing to participate in rotational after-hours and weekend on-call/standby/overtime. 
  • Ability to handle and lift objects up to 30 kgs on a regular basis.
  • Continuous exposure to disagreeable conditions such as dust/dirt, fumes/odors, inclement weather, temperature extremes, bodily wastes/fluids, human waste, fats, oils, rancid food grease, raw sewage, hazardous chemicals, and work in confined spaces. 
  • Willing to wear approved personal protective equipment (PPE), including steel-toe boots.

Conditions of Employment:

  • Valid Yukon Class 3 driver’s license with air brakes endorsement as well as heavy trailer endorsement.
  • Willing to take training including relevant safety training.
