Public Works Utility Maintenance Operator

The Village of Haines Junction invites applications for the permanent full-time position of Public Works Utility Maintenance Operator. General Summary

Reporting to the Public Works Manager, and/or taking direction from lead hand, this position operates, collects, and conducts sampling and testing of water and wastewater quality and distribution, monitors, and repairs equipment. This position also assists with preventative and emergency maintenance to ensure quality, public health and safety of water and wastewater facilities. In addition, it is responsible for assisting with roads, buildings, and grounds maintenance, and performs other related duties.

Duties and Responsibilities - include but are not limited to the following:

  • Test and calibrate; water, wastewater, instruments and controls for compliance and operation.
  • Monitor the performance and control of water and wastewater systems.
  • Operate, service and inspect plant equipment, pumps, lift stations, hydrants, and associated infrastructure.
  • Operate maintenance tools and heavy equipment including backhoe, excavator, wheel loader, dump truck, Skid Steer, sewer flusher and snow removal equipment.
  • Perform maintenance and repair of roads, streets, alleys, trails, right of way, and buildings.
  • Perform maintenance of grounds including chainsaw and mower use.
  • Perform building inspections and maintenance as required.
  • Perform preventative maintenance and ensure maintenance and plant records are accurate and up to date.
  • Develop and follow standard operating procedures for plant equipment and instrumentation.
  • Operate computerized maintenance systems and computer applications such as Outlook, Word, Excel.
  • Assist in routine and emergency repairs to water and wastewater distribution systems.
  • Complete water system certification training and continuing education requirements.
  • Follow established safety procedures and standards so far as is reasonably practicable.
  • Participate in rotational after-hours and weekend on call/standby/overtime.


POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Qualifications

Education and Experience: 

Grade 12. Experience operating heavy equipment is required. Training and/or experience in operating SCADA systems and in municipal water utility would be an asset. Experience in solid waste handling an asset. Experience with boiler maintenance an asset. Skilled trades experience and proven ability to troubleshoot are considered a strong asset. Lab experience with chemicals and sampling, testing and interpretation is an asset. An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.

  • Awareness and interest in the operation, maintenance, and construction of sewage collection systems.
  • Basic knowledge of water and wastewater systems.
  • Knowledge and the ability to follow health and safety rules and regulations.
  • Ability to effectively use computer applications.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the operation of SCADA systems.
  • Ability to operate heavy equipment.
  • Ability to respond to concerns in a timely, solutions-focused manner.
  • Ability to communicate effectively using courtesy, positivity, tact, and discretion in dealing with requests, complaints, or concerns.
  • Proven ability to concentrate, pay attention to detail, organize, priority set, and be a team player.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks.
  • Ability to perform basic math calculations.
  • Ability to represent Municipal Public Works in a professional and competent manner.
  • Good mechanical aptitude.

  • Good public relations skills with the ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.


Additional Information: 

Job Requirements:

  • Willing to work evenings, weekends and/or holidays.
  • Willing to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Willing to participate in rotational after-hours and weekend on-call/standby/overtime.
  • Ability to handle and lift objects up to 30 kgs on a regular basis.
  • Continuous exposure to disagreeable conditions such as dust/dirt, fumes/odors, inclement weather, temperature extremes, bodily wastes/fluids, human waste, fats, oils, rancid food grease, raw sewage, hazardous chemicals, and work in confined spaces
  • Willing to wear approved personal protective equipment (PPE), including steel-toe boots. 

Conditions of Employment:

  • Valid Yukon Class 3A driver’s license as well as heavy trailer endorsement along with driving record check (abstract) or obtain within 3 months.
  • Willing to take training including relevant safety training.
